Moated site in Jamestown

In level pasture, with moderate views in all directions. Situated on N-facing slope of a low E-W ridge. Depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map as a rectangular-shaped area, defined by a scarp. Shown on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map as a rectangular-shaped area enclosed by a bank. Surveyed in 1999 and described as a square shaped area (dims. 48m N-S; 48m E-W) enclosed by a bank (Overall Wth 4.7m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.4m) with fosse (Overall Wth 6.6m; int. D 1.2m; ext. D 1.3m; base Wth 3.4m) incorporated into a field boundary from NW-N-E-S. Possible wall footings of a gatehouse are visible at W, straddling the scarped edge, possibly represents the remains of a stone structure, consisting of a section of wall footings (dims. L 2.5m; Wth 0.6m) running E-W. A modern concrete causeway (Wth 5.2m) is visible to the immediate S of the stone footings. A second possible entrance at E, consisting of two mounds (diam. 2m; H 0.6m) with a gap (Wth 5.6m). On the interior side of these two mounds is a low gentle scarp running into the interior. Interior is level, dry and clear of overgrowth, with NE and SW corners raised 1.2m above the rest of the interior. Truncated by shallow linear infilled ‘drains’ (Wth 2m) forming three platforms (dims. 19m x 8m; 20m x 16m; 20m x 10m; H 0.15m) in the N quadrant, divided from each other by two drains (Wth 2m ) running N-S. The interior is divided in half by a scarp (Wth 2m) running E-W on the S side of the platforms. A drain running N-S divides the S half in two, to the E of this divide is a series of very low irregular undulating which could possibly be structures and to the E is a circular area (diam. 10m) of flagstones.
