Cairn — unclassified in Baunteen

In pasture, on slight NW-facing slope, with good views in all directions. Conjoined enclosures (LI050-018001-/002-) lie 40m to the N. Not marked on OSi maps. Westropp (1920, 383) described the site as; 'A levelled cairn lies about 200 feet (61m) to the S.S.E.; it had a cist and was kerbed with blocks; it was 20 feet [6.1m] to 25 feet [7.6m] across; three of the kerb blocks mark out a semicircle. It consist of small field stones, chiefly sandstone. The west end of the cist and the kerb blocks are of purple conglomerate; the first is 6 feet [1.8m] long N. and S., 2 feet [0.6m] thick, and 2 feet 8 inches [0.8m] high at present; the other end, and the sides and covers, with most of the small stones, and the wall of the eastern ring, have been removed for fences’. An earlier description by Westropp (1919, 21) recorded the following; 'The conjoined rings [LI050-018001-/002-] of Baunteen, with a cairn near them, lying below the great "Harps" formed by coombs and parallel watercourses on the flanks of the Galtees, the ancient Crotta Cliach, may be connected with the divine harper, Cliu, who played on two harps amd gave the mountain its name. The cairn had a cist'. Surveyed by ASI in 1999, and described as no surface remains visible of a cairn or cist could be identified.
