Partially hachured — Scarteen

In gently undulating wet pasture at base of a slight SSE-facing slope and immediately to the N of the Bog River which forms county boundary with Tipperary. On the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map the earthwork is depicted standing in the SE corner of a field immediately N of the river the course of which may have since been altered. On this map the monument is depicted standing in County Limerick with no remains of the earthwork standing in County Tipperary Monument surveyed by the ASI in 2005 and described as a raised roughly semi-circular shaped area (dims. c. 8m NNW-ESE; c. 12m ENE-WSW) defined by an earthen scarp (Wth 2.2m; ext. H 1.3m) with an external fosse (overall Wth 3m; base Wth 1.4m; D 0.3m). At ENE and at WSW the scarped edge is partially eroded where a modern double drainage ditch and field boundary, that lies along the N bank of the Bog River, links to the edge of the barrow. The scarped edge is absent from E-WSW where the straight edge of the monument is defined by the NE-SW orientated Bog River. The river course may have altered since the monument was constructed and the monument may have extended further south. The fosse is absent from ENE-W where the drainage ditch abuts the edge of the barrow at ENE and at WSW and also to the S of the Bog River. The interior undulates slightly, is dry and overgrown with trees and bushes but is accessible. Outline of scrub-covered earthwork is visible on Google Earth orthoimages.
