What is recorded here

In reclaimed pasture, 180m N of Elton House. Not marked on OSi historic maps. Possible site identified as a rectangular enclosure during examination of aerial photographs (BGE 1/10,000, 71) taken 03/11/1984 on Bórd Gáis Éireann gas pipeline. Monument visible as rectangular shaped area (dims. c. 40m N-S; 50m E-W) defined by L-shaped cropmark from W to N transected by post-1700 field boundary at E and by drainage channel at S on Digital Globe orthoimage taken between 2011-13. Enclosing cropmark visible as waterlogged fosse on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 19/03/2015. Presence of waterlogged fosse acting a moat may indicate moated site classification. Alternatively may be the remains of a landscape feature associated with Elton House. See attached Google Earth orthoimages. Compiled by: Fiona Rooney Date of upload: 1 June 2021
