What is recorded here

The precise location of a possible castle and bawn in the townland of Ballycullane has not been identified. Westropp (1906-7, 192) recorded the following details about a doubtful castle site in Ballycullane; '1320 Ric. and Pat. L'Enfaunt held Ballycollen from Sir T. de Luc as part of the manor of Andesse, County Limerick (Mem. R., No. 34). 1657 The bawne of Ballycullane in Athenessie held by Patrick Kearney (C.S,, xxv., p. 11). A doubtful site'. The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that Patrick Kearney of Kilmallock an Irish papist was the owner in Ballycullane of 'one plowland, now the jointure of Ellis Kearney widdowe, whereupon there is a Bawne, orchard and two tatch houses' (Simington 1938, 236).
