What is recorded here

The precise location of a castle in the townland of Ballincurra has not been identified. Westropp (1906-7, 168) recorded the following details about Ballincurragh; '1655 Ballycoragh C[astle]. in Athlacca (D.S.A., 45); no other mention. Doubtful site.'. Tower house like castle depicted standing in centre of the townland of Ballincurra on the 1654-7 Down Survey map of Cosham Barony (Hib. Reg.). The terrier of the Down Survey map of Athlacca Parish recorded that 'upon Athlacka & Ballincurragh stands two Castles' (NLI, MS 718). This castle stood on lands belonging to George Thornton (ibid.). See attached Down Survey barony map Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 30 April 2021

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
