What is recorded here

An eighteenth century map of Newcastle West shows a mill on Goat Street (South Quay) on the south bank of the river close to the bridge at the S end of Bridge Street (O’Connor 1998, 6-7). O’Connor (ibid.) considers this ‘probably the successor of a mill recorded circa 1586.’ There are no indications of a mill here on the 1841 OS six-inch map, nor is there any evident trace of such a structure in this location today. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
