Water mill — unclassified in Castle Demesne,knockane

The precise location of the medieval mill of 'Molten mcEgower' in the historic town of Newcastlewest has not been identified. The mill was located on Goat Street now The South Quay. The Urban Survey of Limerick (Bradley et. al. 1989, 200-01) recorded the following about the medieval watermills in the historic town (LI036-067001-) of Newcastlewest; 'There is a mention of mills in the late 13th century and again in the 15th century (Westropp 1906-7, 232; idem, 1904-5, 406). In the sixteenth century a square mill, called "Mollen mcEgower" is mentioned on Shradegower (Goat St. now The South Quay: Westropp 1909, 58) and this is probably the mill shown on the 18th century map at the south east end of Bridge St. (The Annual Observer 1981, 26). In 1586 the watermill called 'Molten mcEgower' belonging to the manor of Newcastle was described as following; 'A street in Newcastell called Shradegower [Goat Street] with a tenement yard, orchard, and 8 gardens and with certain lands adjacent to the tenement. Said premises belong to said manor and castle, are parcel of the demesne lands called the Earl's free land as aforesaid, are situate in the parish of Monaghe Adare, now or late in the tenure of Edmund mcEgowre and contain 10 acres. A water mill called Molten mcEgower built on a part or parcel of said street belonging, situate and in the tenure of said Edmund as aforesaid' (Murphy 2013, 104-05).
