Field system in Ballylahiff (coonagh By.)

Pattern of rectilinear cropmarks, some perpendicular to each other adjacent to moated site (LI033A004001-) which are clearly visible on oblique aerial photographs (CUCAP AVT042) taken 20/07/1968. Visited by Celie O’Rahilly in 1992 and described as following; ‘An aerial photograph, supplied by the Co. Limerick SMR Office, shows an extensive linear earthwork field system surround a rectangular earthwork, (possible moated site), which is located co-tangent with the western field boundary. The photograph also shows the main concentration of the linear earthworks to be to the west of this monument, but examination of the area to the east showed that these are equally extensive to the east, where, however, one north-south mound, running parallel to the existing field system, could be the remains of a more modern boundary as it is shown on the first edition of the O.S. 6” (Sheet 25). It is possible that some of the complex might be field drains, the majority of the other earthworks are at a variance with the slope of the field, (which is slight and down to the south), and to the existing system. They would appear to be interrelated to each other and to the central rectangular “platform”.’ Pattern of rectilinear earthworks clearly visible on OSi orthophotograph taken between 2005-12 and on Google Earth orthoimages.
