Church (Site of) — Kilteely

Westropp (1904-5, 446) recorded the following details about Kilteely; 'Parish in Coonagh and Small County. St. Patrick, with his disciples Muin and Lommchu, came to Tedel, where Lommchu founded Cell Tidil Church at the saint's desire, c. 450 ("Trip. Life," 204). It is a reputed templary. In 1321 N. and Juliana de Lees claimed dower on Kiltyle, or Kyltyl, from John Ulf (Plea R. 133 of xiv Ed. II, m. 78, and several other entries). In 1324 Lucas and Agnes de Netterville made similar claims (ib., 38 of xviii, m. 9). In 1325 William Bole was vicar of Kyltyle (Mem. R., vol. xxiv., 290). No church is depicted at this location on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map, OS trig station marking OD 580 ft. marked at this location on the first ed. OS 6-inch map. On an elevated platform of Kilteely Hill with good views. Rectangular-shaped area (internal dims. 10m N-S; 15m E-W) defined by the remains of a low sod covered stone wall (Wth 5.5m; int. H 0.25m; ext. H 1.0m) from S (L 15m), to W (L 10m) and N (L 16m); scarp (Wth 0.75m; H 0.45m) to E (L 10.5m). Stones detected under sod and are visible mid-way along scarp at E. Interior is grass covered and slightly uneven. Church and graveyard (LI033-011001- and LI033-011002-) c. 300m to NE.
