Hut site in Loughgur

On rocky pasture on the S-facing slope of Knocksentry Hill overlooking Knockadoon Peninsula located 1km to SW in an area known as Knockroe. The site is one of six monuments on and around the hill including the standing stone annotated 'Leagaun' (LI032-051----) located 330m to W; a mound (LI032-056003-) lies 350m to NNW; an enclosure (LI032-056006-) located 280m to N; an earthwork (LI032-056001-) located 325m to NW and a flat cemetery, annotated ‘Kistvaen Field’ (LI032-055----) 260m to W. Circle O (LI032-060----) and Circle P (LI032-059----) are 240m to SW. The site is not depicted on OSi historic maps. The ground at the site is visibly uneven and slopes S, although no definitive monument is visible on the OSi orthoimage taken 2005-12 or on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-2013. The site was discovered during an archaeological field inspection by Celie O’Rahilly in 1996 on Knocksentry Hill. The monument consisted of an anomalous stone group located in 'Field A'. The field boundaries were either stone-faced earthen embankments or stone walls. O’Rahilly identified ‘three stones visible forming an arch which surrounds a low mound’. The stones consisted of a recumbent stone (dims. 1m N-S; Wth. 0.35m), an upright stone with a stone setting at the base (H. 0.7m; 0.5m N-S; W. 0.25m) and an earthfast boulder (dims. 0.5m E-W; Wth. 0.4m; H. 0.25m). The boulder is located at the E of the field near a field boundary in which other stones may be located. The recumbent and upright stones are located to the W and are aligned N-S. There is a natural shelf to the W which was identified as a ‘possible hut site’. The location is visible on the Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018 and 20/09/2020.
