Giants Grave (Site of) — Grange (smallcounty By.)

Situated on flat pasture 550m S of the summit of a low hill known as Ardaghlooda and 60m W of Lough Gur. Located SE and SW of a dense concentration of prehistoric monuments around the lake at Grange and on the Knockadoon Peninsula (Cleary 2018). The site (LI032-010003-) is located 5m W of a historic trackway running NNW-SSE known as Cladh na Leac (LI032-010001-). The great stone circle at Grange (LI032-004001-) is located 250m to NW. Two stone circles (LI032-005/006----) are 350m to NW. Standing stone known as Cloch á Bhíle (LI032-007----) lies 200m to WNW, two possible megalithic tombs (LI032-318/004002-) are located 250m to NW. The site is not depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map nor is it on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map. Annotated 'Giant’s Grave (Site of)' on the Cassini OSi 6-inch map. The site is recorded in the Megalithic Survey of Ireland (De Valera and Ó Nualláin 1982, 78) as follows: ‘Lynch states that it was "some kind of a stone structure" and was told by a very old man at Lough Gur that he took stones from it and that it was shaped like a grave. No trace of this feature survives and its nature is uncertain. The site has been mentioned by a number of authors (Harkness 1869, 394; O'Kelly 1944, 45), the most comprehensive account is by Lynch (1895, 299).
