National monument No. 247. Standing stone situated on W facing slope of hill or rock outcrop marked on OS map as 'Ardaghlooda' 250m W of Lough Gur and surrounded by a cluster of prehistoric monuments. Two enclosures (LI032-011001-/002-) and a field system (LI032-011003-) lie immediately to the NE and E with standing stone (LI032-009----) in field 70m to SW. An ancient trackway or road marked as 'Cladh na Leac' runs N-S immediately to the W of the standing stone. Three stone circles (LI032-006-/005-/004001-) in field 225m to SSW. Described in 1978 as a tall reclining orthostat (H 3m) (O'Kelly and O'Kelly 1978, 13) which is now clearly visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph.
In 1919 the following folklore about this standing stone was recorded; 'An old man, however suggested to me that Cromcon, which could hardly be a corruption of Cinn Con, was from the Irish Cromcheann, "bowed head", and that it was probably the name of the bowed pillar-stone at the foot of Ardaghlooda or Paddock Hill, at the west side of Lough Gur' (Lynch 1919, 74). Lynch also suggested that Aenach of Clochar held at the rock above Lough Gur and that the standing stone may mark the location of the assembly-place or fair green of Old Clochar (ibid., 74-5).
