The precise location of a thatched house in the townland of Ballyculleen depicted on the 17th century Down Survey map of Coshma Barony (Hib. Reg.) has not been identified. On this map the house is depicted as a single storey building standing close to the townland boundary with Rosstemple in the parish of Ballingaddy. The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that James Leo of Ballycullline an Irish Papist was the owner of ‘a good tatcht house walled with stone, and an orchard thereupon’ which stood in the part parish of Croom (Simington 1938, 138). Ballyculleen House (ITM 553876/637389) depicted on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map is located in roughly the same area where the ‘Thatched House’ is depicted on the Down Survey map.
