Though listed as a castle by Westropp (1906-7, 246, no 396) he also suggest that the existence of a castle in this townland is 'unknown' (ibid.). According to Westropp this possible castle of Ballyegan (Baile Éignigh/Ballyegny) in the Parish of Rathronan was; 'Unknown. Given as in this parish with last in O.S.L. (9, p. 74), and separately from Ballyegny (Ib., p. 166). It closely resembled Ballyvoghan in size and remains'. Could be a duplicate site with Ballyegny Castle (LI028-020----). The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
