What is recorded here

The precise location of a medieval watermill in the townland of Monahila has not been identified. Pollardstown Castle (LI025-031----) and watermill are depicted on the 1657 Down Survey map of Coonagh Barony (Hib. Reg.). The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that the recently deceased James Butler of Pollordstowne, an Irish Papist, was the owner of 'a Mill and a broken Castle' (Simington 1938, 19). Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 8 December 2020

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
