Clashatloe, Outlined — Ballytrasna

In dense woodland, 65m NE of a townland boundary with Ballynagally. Annotated ‘Clashatloe’ on the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map where it is depicted as a roughly -D-shaped earthwork. Earthwork not shown on the revised 1897 ed. OS 25-inch map where a long scarp or cliff-face (70m NW-SE; 25m ENE-WSW) is depicted. Monument visited by the ASI in 2008 when access was not gained due to dense vegetation. A steep counterscarp (Wth 2.4m; H 2.25m) was noted to define the W-side and the southern portion of the interior was submerged in water. This seems to be a depression rather than an extant feature so it is possible that this is a former quarry. A number of quarry pits are depicted close to E, SE and NW on the 1840 ed. OS 6-inch map. Possible monument is visible as a tree and scrub-covered area on OSi orthimage taken 2005-2012, on Digital Globe orthoimage taken 2011-2013 and on Google Earth orthoimage taken 28/06/2018.
