Field system in Knockcorragh

In pasture, on top and around the sides of a natural hillock 350m NW of the Camoge River and the townland boundary with Cahercorney, with excellent views in all directions. The cashel on the summit of Knockcorragh (LI023-088----) is located within the field system. The field system is partially depicted on the OSi 1840 ed. 6-inch as a dashed line suggesting it was a series of relic field boundaries at the time. It is not depicted on the 1897 ed. 25-inch map. The field system and enclosures /hut sites are visible on the OSi orthoimages taken 2005-12 and on the Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013. Identified as a relic field system around a cashel (LI023-088----) by the Bruff aerial photographic survey in 1986 (Bruff 280: AP 4/3689). A substantial field boundary extends from around the N side of the cashel (LI023-088----) orientated E-W. The NW end of this field boundary curves around the N edge of the fort. A separate field boundary runs S off this E-W field boundary and curves to the W forming and field enclosure (ext. diam. 45m N-S; 45m E-W) adjoining the SE side of the cashel. This field contains 3 further smaller enclosures located 10m SE of the cashel (LI023-088----) which may be hut sites (2 circular (ext. diam. 8m) and 1 rectangular (ext. diam. 8m). There are further features located in the field adjacent to the cashel, although these are unconfirmed and may also reflect the underlying rocky topography. The field system extends SW to the mound (LI023-087----) located on a spur at the foot of the hill and to the S and E. The field system and enclosures are visible on Digital Google Earth orthoimages taken 5/4/06, 25/03/2017 and 28/06/2018.
