Outlined — Caherass

In gently undulating pasture with good views in all directions, on the demesne lands of Caherass Court 440m to SW. Located 325m N of the River Maigue and the townland boundary with Ballynahown. Ringfort (LI021-092----) 65m to SE and possible barrow (LI021-089----) 130m to NNW. Depicted as a circular enclosure around a copse of trees on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map. Shown as a tree-ring (ext. diam. 42m N-S; 34m E-W) on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map with a fosse on its N, E and S side. On this map the W half has been incorporated into a field boundary with an estate avenue running along W side. Not depicted as an antiquity on any ed. OSi maps. Inspected by the ASI in 2001 when it was described as a raised roughly circular shaped area (int. diam. 27m N-S; 26m E-W) defined by an earthen scarped edge with external fosse(Wth 4.5m; int. D 1.2m; ext. D 0.9m). The interior was level, dry and lightly overgrown. An oval flat-topped mound (ext. diam. 12m NE-SW; 6m NW-SE; H 0.4m) visible in the NW corner of the ringfort. A field boundary (orientated NNE-SSW) runs along the NW side of the ringfort between the scarped edge and has removed the fosse on the NW side. The site is covered in trees visible on Google Earth orthoimages taken 28/06/2018 and 14/02/2020. Possible ringfort that was reused as a landscape feature, alternatively may be the remains of a landscape feature associated with Caherass Court.
