Clogh Castle described in 1840 as 'These ruins are of rectangular form, 22 feet broad. The east wall is perfect; the west wall is completely destroyed; and only fragments of the other walls remains. There was a small edifice built against the east side, 20 feet long and 12 feet wide; its walls are perfect, and there is a chimney still standing' (OSNB Croagh Parish, 511).
Westropp (1906-7, 217-8) recorded the following details about Cloghadeboy Castle; '1583 T. Mac Rudderye owned Clohokotredboy, in Toghe Croghe. 1586 It and Kiltennan were held by Maur. mac Edm. Sarsfield (Des. R., 21b; Peyton, 207). Peyton distinguishes it from Cloghatred (supra, pp. 72, 79). The C[astle]. was granted to J. Stroude, 1587 (Carew i., p. 449), and in 1593 to Bob. Stroude, with Ballycottred, Cappagh, &c. (Fi. 5781). 1655 Held by Major-Gen. Hardress Waller (C.S., p. 50) not to be confused with Cloghatred, in Nantinan (supra, 316). Fabric - A tower 22 feet [6.7m] wide, the east side nearly perfect, with a side wing 20 feet [6m] by 12 feet [3.65m], and chimney (O.S.L., 9, p. 438).
