Tower Hill — Tuogh (owneybeg By.)

Towerhill House stands on site of Tuogh Castle, 590m SSW of Tough Church (LI015-031001-). Seymour (1907, 371) recorded the following details about Tuogh Castle; 'The Down Survey notes that "there is at Tuogh Killuragh a Castle in repaire, and a Stonehouse [LI015-048----] in repaire, and Six Cabbins" (this last is evidently the village alluded to above); while the Civil Survey speaks of "Tuogh and Pallisbeg, two ploughlands with a castle in repaire, a Bawen, a stone-house [LI015-048----], an Orchard, two mills seate, and the demolished Castle of Pallisbeg [LI015-047----]." The Mac Brien family owned these castles and lands'. Westropp (1906-7, 100-1) recorded the following details about Tough [Teauragh/Tower Hill] Castle; 'Not marked. It appears in many curious forms in Tudor documents. Zoghesgren, Xoghtesgrene, Johenishesgrene, attempts to transliterate "Tuath Aesgreine." 1544 The Manor C[astle]. or fort of Toghexgrene was recovered from a gang of robbers, called the "Oolde children," in Ogonagh, and granted to Thady Mac Brian and his heirs of Grenegounaghe (Fi., 153, Pat. R., 59). 1587 Teige O'Brien held Tooghesgrey, 1591 Morhirtagh, dominus de Patria Twahaosagrene, obiit (Inq. Exch., 5). 1606 Livery of Manor of Tuoghesigreene to Murtagh, son of Tirlagh Maclbrien Arra (Pat. R.). 1653 W. Collins allowed £3 4s.2d. for repair of Tough Garrison (Acct. R., 14). 1655 Teauragh, Tough, and Tometerriff shown with two towers (D.S.A., 30). Tough and Pallisbeg C[astle] in repair, bawen, orchards, and two mill seats on the river Glydagh held by Teige O'Brien (C.S., xxs.; p. 8, B.D., p. 115). 1666 Roger, Earl of Orrery, confirmed in Manor of Twagh, with Tometarriff and Tearaffe or Teauragh (Act Sett.). It was in later days the residence of the Lloyd family'. The 1654-56 Civil Survey recorded that Tadhg O'Brien was the owner of the lands of 'Towgh an Pallicebeg' on which there stood a 'Castle [Tuogh Castle] in repaire a Bawen a stone house [LI015-048----] an Orchard two Millseates and the Demolished Castle of Pallicebeg [LI015-047----]' (Simington 1938, 8). The terrier of the Down Survey map of Tuogh Parish stated that 'There is at Twogh Killuragh a Castle in repaire and a stone house [LI015-048----] in repaire and six Cabbins' (NLI, MS 718).
