Spa Wells, Outlined — Inch St. Lawrence North

Situated immediately SW of a small road in a gravelled area, N of poorly-drained pasture. Indicated on 1923 OS 6-inch map as 'Spa Well (Chalybeate) (covered)'. The walls of the well have been damaged due to car crashes in recent years. Oval of water (1.2m E-W) enclosed to W and S by partial stone walls (H 1.1m) of roughly hewn mortared limestone with a partial pillar of un-hewn limestone immediately to S. There is an alcove in the N face of the S wall just above the water level and, according to local information, a rounded 'prayer-stone' exists beneath this. Spa Well described in 1840 as following; The well is 'said to be equally available for liver or scorbutic affectations' and is 'situated in the northwest corner of Pust South Townland and Inch St. Laurence, lying to the south side of the road from Croom to Caherconlish. At descriptive remarks it is said this well is about three feet [0.9m] in diameter and covered by small house about five feet [1.5m] high; its water is esteemed good, which proceeds from iron' (OSL, 104).
