The precise location of Derryknockane Castle within the townland has not been identified. Westropp (1906-07, 151) recorded the following details about Derryknockane; 'Lord Grey captured Deryknockan C[astle]. from " Claudus, alias Teig baccagh" and other O'Briens, "mere rebels, public robbers, and malefactors," but was restored (it is alleged by a plot of E. Sexten, who was bribed by Teige, it is said, with a grant of the park and a chamber in the C[astle]), and had to be retaken (Inq. Exch., 2). 1594 Stephen Sexten held the lower "Bedd Chamber" in it (lb., 50). 1607 Dom. Roche held C[astle]. (Inq. Chan., 2a). 1634 Dan. O'Brien of Carrigogonnell held C[astle]. at his death, and devised it to David Bourke of Kilpeacon (lb.', Car. I., 211). 1657 The broken C[astle]. (C.S., xxix., p. 27)'.
The 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick recorded that the deceased Donnogh O'Brien of Carrigogunnell an Irish Papist was the owner of Derryknockane which contained a 'bawne and a broken Castle' (Simington 1938, 478).
