What is recorded here

On a gentle SSW-facing slope, in pasture, on the N side of Schoolhouse Road, Castletroy. Not depicted on OS historic mapping. Identified by Flor Hurley in 2003 during monitoring (Licence No. 03E1382) for a housing scheme known as Glantan and excavated (Licence No. 03E1717) by Niamh O’Callaghan later in 2003. In Area 7, the remains of a fulachta fiadh (FF2) were excavated. It comprised of a black silty spread (10.5m x 8.5m; D 0.2m) containing heat-shattered stone and was located approximately 5m from a small stream. Two large, yet shallow rectangular-shaped features (possible troughs) and five small circular pits were recorded under the remains of the burnt spread and were all filled with heat-shattered stone (ibid). A second fulacht fiadh (FF3) (LI005-088010-) was found as a result of this excavation (O'Callaghan 2006, 309). See attached plan extract from monitoring report (Hurley 2003).
