What is recorded here

Marked on the 1835 and 1911 'OS 6-inch' maps as 'Ultan's Well'. The OS Letters also refer to a well called Tobar Ultan. It is a large U-shaped pool (L 4m; Wth 3m; D 1.7m), cut into a slight slope of a ridge with a narrow trench leading into a nearby drain at W. Local tradition holds that the water can cure coughs. (ASI field notes, 1967). Also noted that the water was used for domestic purpose and that it prevented disease (Irish Folklore Commission Schools' Manuscripts 665, 105).
