Souterrain — Castletowncooley

The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Circular area (int. diam. 20.5m) enclosed by two widely spaced earthen banks. Inner bank (Wth 5m, H 0.2m internally, 2.3m externally) with traces of both internal and external stone facings. The outer bank (Wth 2.8m, H 0.3m internally, 0.9m externally) is overlain in the W quadrant by a modern wall. The space between the two banks varies (Wth 6.5m-13m). Entrance at the SE represented by gap in both banks with two radial banks running across the intervening space between the banks to create a funnel effect. Another radial bank crosses the intervening space between the banks at the NW. Split-level interior divided by V-shaped drystone-faced scarp (H 0.7m). N section of interior contains collapsed souterrain (LH008-013002-). Sub-rectangular enclosure (LH008-013003-) (int. dims. 40m N-S, 36m E-W), possibly modern, enclosed by earthen bank adjoining site at SE.
