What is recorded here

A castle is depicted on an early 17th-century map of Shrule barony (BL, Cotton MS Augustus I.ii.26) close to the S bank of the Inny River, in the S sector of the townland near the border with Rathmore. It is also depicted on the Down Survey (1655–6) map of Abbeyshrule barony (NLI, MS 719) and is listed in an Inquisition post mortem into the property of Maurice Fitzgerald in 1635 (Anon. 1826, Inq. 14 Car 1). Its precise location has not been identified. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 3 October 2012

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
