What is recorded here

In 1620 Thomas Nugent of Coolamber, county Westmeath received a land grant that included the townland of 'Freaghmeene. 82a arable and pasture and 32a wood and bog, with a water-mill' (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., Jas I, 499). In 1663 Nugent was seized of a 'cornmill in Friaghmine' (Ainsworth and MacLysaght 1958, 151). The precise location of the mill has not been identified. The corn mill depicted on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, bordering county Westmeath, may have been built on or close to its site. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 7 February 2013

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
