In 1620, as part of the Plantation of Longford, the English Crown granted Thomas Beare ‘the castle and lands of Creeve’ (Cal. pat. rolls Ire., Jas I, 467). The castle is depicted on an early 17th-century map of Granard barony (BL, Cotton MS Augustus I.i.47), close to the border with county Cavan, in an area that roughly corresponds with the location of Creevy House. However, its precise location has not been identified.
