What is recorded here

Described by Lewis (1837, vol. 1, 374) as ‘the ruins of Clonleman castle’ on the island of ‘Clondra’ and situated near the remains of the church (LF013-018----). Gray (1943, 23) noted that a ‘hamlet called Castletown stood on the island [Cloondara] near the Shannon at the Longford end of the Tarmonbarry bridge. The ruins of a castle called Clonleman still remained here about a hundred years ago and is very possibly the same as the Clenlonan which is mentioned in one of the Patent Rolls’. Its precise location has not been identified. Compiled by: Caimin O'Brien Date of upload: 3 October 2012

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
