Incorporated in the S face of the W pier of the gateway, which is on the N side of the 19th-century courtyard attached to the now-levelled ‘Kilshruley Manor’. This inscribed stone (H 0.22m; Wth 0.5m) bears the following inscription: ‘CAPTAIN ANDREW ADAIRE DID REPAIR THIS CASTLE IN ANNO DOM 1666’. The stone undoubtedly came from the castle (LF010-135----) that stood on or in close proximity to the house. Captain Adaire served as an officer in the army of Charles I and is listed as one of the ‘1649 Officers’ who was granted land under the Act of Settlement (1662) and Explanation (1665) (O’Hart 1884, 372, 452). He is returned in the 1659 Census as one of the principal gentlemen residing in the Corporation of St Johnstown (now Ballinalee) (Farrell 1891, 144; Pender 2002, 459).
