‘In 1991 a human skull was found following dredging operations in the Ballinlough River at Ballinlough, near Granard, Co. Longford. The skull (2002:30) appears to have been found on the riverbank in the dredged material, approximately 70 yards from Killeen Lake. It remained in the possession of the finder, and was only reported to the local Gardaí in 1998, after his death. The Gardaí at Granard informed the NMI through Jim Higgins, heritage officer for County Galway.’ (Cahill and Sikora 2011, Vol. 2, 494)
The first of two footnotes in the 2011 publication states that this burial was located in the ‘Parish of Granard, barony of Granard. SMR LF010-133----; exact location not marked. The second footnote recorded that ‘the skull was acquired in 2002.’
