What is recorded here

Situated in a small field on a summit of a broad E-W ridge. This feature is depicted as a D-shaped enclosure on the 1835 edition of the OS 6-inch map and similarly on the 1945 revision. It was regarded locally as a rath in 1945 (OSFM). This is a circular of D-shaped platform (dims. 29.5m N-S; 28m E-W; H 0.6m) surrounded by a wet, flat-bottomed fosse (at E: Wth of base 1.8m; int. D 0.3m; ext. D 0.2m), with traces of a slight outer earthen bank (Wth 3m; H 0.2m) N-SE. The platform is overlain by a straight N-S field bank at W and NE-SW field banks with hedges at N and S, forming a small paddock. The original entrance is not identified. The above description is derived from 'The Archaeological Inventory of County Leitrim' compiled by Michael J. Moore (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2003). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revised upload: 16 October 2019
