There is a tradition that St Patrick crossed the River Shannon into Connaught at a ford where the river forms an island – Inish na gCon, the island of the dogs. His charioteer, who died there, was buried on the Connaught side at a church called Cill Buaid maol, which is not known, but the townland of Drumboylan recalls his name. The stones of the ford were removed to create a channel. (MacNamee 1954, 740)
