What is recorded here

Situated in undulating countryside. The W half of an enclosure (C c. 75m SW-N) is marked on the 1908 edition of the OS 6-inch map. Remains of an earthen bank (Wth c. 1.8m; int. H c. 0.5m) survive. There was a castle (LA028-060001-) in the interior at N. This castle was known locally as Rathpiper, was associated with Pipard a descendant of Adam de Hereford and stood here as a ruins until 1836 (Carrigan 1905, vol. 2, 6, 71). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran.
