According to the History of the Queens County 'Castletown Protestant church is on the site of a more ancient one, and a grave-yard, as also Castletown House and Maidenhead House. A remarkable mound is at a few paces distance from the church. Newcastle, in ruins, and Towerlton House are also here' (O'Hanlon and O'Leary 1907, vol. 1, 251).
Church of Ireland church may be located on site of medieval church, motte and bailey (LA026-011001-) located approx. 200m to the SW of the church and graveyard (LA026-011003-), levelled circular enclosure (LA026-011004-) located 170m S of church.
