What is recorded here

In undulating countryside. Earthworks visible on aerial photographs (GSI S, 79-80) to SE of tower house (LA021-013001-). No visible surface remains. Remains of an enclosure in a pasture field 100m E of the tower House (LA021-013001-). This is a subrectangular area (dims. 40m N-S x 60m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3m; H 0.1-0.2m) and fosse on the E and S sides with traces of a bank on the W which disappears at NW. The N boundary of this feature is not visible in the field to the N of the intersecting field bank. The fosse is less clear and there has been some quarrying along its outer edge. This is probably just an old field and is not associated with the nearby tower house. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Laois' (Dublin Stationery Office, 1995) compiled by P. David Sweetman, Olive Alcock and Bernie Moran. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 09 December 2011
