Enclosure in Cotterellsbooly

In pasture, c. 1.7km SW of the confluence of the River Nore and the Kings River. A barrow (KK027-035----), where the Roman Stonyford burial (KK027-095----) may have found, is located 250m to the NW, with its adjacent enclosure (KK027-096----) c. 205m to the NW. A circular enclosure (KK027-098----) lies c. 100m to the N and a barrow (KK027-036----) c. 110m to the S. Portion of a possible rectilinear enclosure (dims. 33m N-S; 50m E-W), the fosse of which was identified as a result of a geophysical survey carried out in 2014 (Rassmann et al. 2019, 355-7). Only the N and E fosse, with the NE angle, were revealed in the geophysical survey as this rectilinear feature was located at the lower limit of the area covered by the survey (ibid. 355). Within the possible interior a number of pit-like and linear features were identified (ibid.). This may be a medieval moated site, however, it was also suggested in light of its proximity to barrows, one of which may have been where the Stonyford Roman burial was deposited, and its adjacent, possible Iron Age enclosure (KK027-096----), that this may have links with Late Iron Age square ritual enclosures (ibid. 356).   Compiled by: Jean Farrelly
