Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 292-3) mentions several castles in Callan, though these are difficult to precisely locate. According to Carrigan (ibid. 293), ‘a third stood about midway between the Town Hall and the Bank’. Farrelly et al. (1993, vol. 1, 114-15; vol. 2, map 7:1) indicate a possible location for this castle on the E side of Green Street, however, based on Carrigan’s description the location should be further S where the houses are slightly more set back from the road. The largest building on this stretch of streetscape is the three-storey AIB bank, the other buildings being two-storey properties. The precise location of this castle mentioned by Carrigan is unknown. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 7 June 2022

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
