Prim (1862-3, 234), describes how ‘two ancient sepulchral vases’ were found at ‘upper Grange’. ‘In deeply ploughing a field a large stone was come upon, on raising which, a small kist, formed of flags, was discovered, in which were the urns – one containing burned bones, and the other inverted over it, like a cover, - the upper urn being somewhat larger than the other’ (ibid.). He goes on to relate that, ‘the finders being disappointed at the discovery that they had not got a “pot of gold,” broke the urns to pieces; and he had been unable to obtain even the smallest fragment’ (ibid.). The precise location of the cist is unknown within Grange Upper townland.
