Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 421-2) gives the derivation of ‘Kilmanahan’ as, ‘the Church of St. Mainchin (pronounced Monniaheen)’. He goes on to say that while there is no tradition of a church in this townland, but that ‘Most probably it stood on Edward Dowling’s “Thullach,” a green hill crowned by the ruins of an ancient cyclopean building, standing east and west, 39 ft. [c. 12m] long by 24 ft. [7.3m] wide, the walls being now only about 2 ft. [c. 0.6m] high’. The precise location of this building within the townland is unknown.
