Settlement deserted — medieval in Kilbline

In good undulating pasture. The medieval settlement of Kilbline is associated with a church (KK024-083001-) and graveyard (KK024-083004-) and a tower house (KK024-083003-) c. 250m to the E. Kilbline is first mentioned in the Ormond Deeds (Curtis 1932, vol. 1, entry 502, 200) in c. 1315, ‘Arnald le Poer grants to John de Stanes and Erneburga his wife and the heirs of the said John 67 acres in Kilblethyn’ [Kilbline]. In 1364 an, ‘Indenture made between Thomas de Shuldham on one part and Richard Moynge on the other, namely that whereas Henry Kepagh, chaplain, granted to Thomas ten librates of annual rent from all lands and tenements of his Kilblethyn into whosesoever hands they shall come, which lands and tenements above Richard has of the gift and grant of said Henry…Given at Kilblethyn on the 12th August, in the 38th year of Edward III, August 12, 1364’ (Curtis 1934, vol. 2, entry 103, 86). Another document from the same year refers to, ‘the burgesses of Kylbleyn [Kilbline] render per annum 25s and suit of court. John Redmond (Remund’) of the same vill renders for his burgage per annum 2s 6d. William Burran of the same vill renders per annum 2s 6d for his burgage. Also Sir (Dominus) Mortoun is held to suit of court at Kylbleyn’ (ibid. entry 433, 340). The following year, October 1365, ‘Richard son of Thomas Maygne gives and grants to Henry Kepagh, chaplain, all his messuages, lands, tenements, rents and services of all free holders in Kilblethyn’ (ibid., entry 116, 92). There are further entries in relation to these properties in Kilblethyn in 1369 (ibid. entry 149, 112; entry 150, 113) In the sixteenth century the lands of Kilbline were among the possessions of Thomas Comerford of Ballymack and were confiscated when he was attainted for rebellion in 1566 (Carrigan 1905, vol. 3, 485). These possessions were leased to James Prescott in 1577 (Fiant Eliz. 3012), to Francis Lovell in 1583 (Fiant Eliz. 4267) and finally were granted to Henry Comerford in 1586 (Fiant Eliz. 4909). Kilbline passed to the Shortall family in or by 1586 (Carrigan 1905, vol. 3, 485). The Shortall possessions were confiscated under Cromwell and as part of the Restoration settlement Kilbline was granted to the Duke of York and occupied by Dudly Mannering from 1659 (Malone 1992).
