Indicated — Burnchurch

Indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map as a small rectangular field (dims. c. 42m N-S; c. 27m E-W). A well, ‘St. Dallan’s Well’ is indicated c. 5m W of the NW angle, with a small pool and stream running from this northward, meeting a larger stream which runs E-W c. 50m to the N. Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 376) when describing this well mentions that, ‘The old basin [of the well, i.e. that marked on the 1st ed. map], however, remains uninjured, about 40 yds. to the north [actually to the S], beside the fosse of a small square rath’. On the 1st ed. map a field boundary is indicated running roughly E-W up to both the E and W side of the enclosure, but not crossing it. By the 1947 revision only the N portion of the rectangular enclosure is indicated, outlined by water courses, and the E-W field boundary indicated on the 1st ed. map is shown as running uninterrupted. On satellite imagery (Google Earth, imagery date 13 August 2015) the S portion of the enclosure is visible as a cropmark, the N portion is in an area of scrub. More recent satellite imagery (Google Earth, imagery date 19 May 2020) shows that this area of scrub has been cleared and reclaimed.
