What is recorded here

At St Mary's parish church (KK019-026115-) in Kilkenny. The upper half of a rectangular slab (L 0.84m; Wth 0.61m), the mensa of a mid-16th-century chest-tomb or ledger from St. Mary's parish church (KK019-026115-). Decorated with a seven-armed segmented ringed cross with geometric fleur-de-lis terminals. The cross-head rises from a shaft which is knobbed at its top. Streamers flank either side of the shaft. A marginal inscription in false relief Latin blackletter reads: H - QUI OBIT + XIIII DIE MARTIS ---- MCCCCC XLIII OCTOBER Translation: H[ere lies] ---- who died 13th March 1543 October Possibly originally part of the in-situ chest tomb (KK019-026366-) in the NE corner of the N transept. The slab was set into the floor of the Monuments Room in the 1960s. It was moved to its present location in the S transept in 2015. Compiled by: Cóilín Ó Drisceoil Date of upload: 4 January 2023
