What is recorded here

According to Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 446), 'a church and a village, both now obliterated, stood here in former times. The site is pointed out in a field broken up with mounds and trenches'. Writing about Mountgale townland, O'Kelly (1969, 9) notes that, 'Old house foundations were uncovered by an excavator in Dunphy's land in 1955, probably the old village site'. The precise location of this settlement within the townland is unknown. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 7 July 2020

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.

The map shows the centre of the officially named townland area, not the monument. The government record does not identify the exact monument point.
