The Down Survey (1655-6) parish map of Shankill depicts a substantial house in the townland of 'Balleemcloughlin' which equates well with the modern townland of Kellymount (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). The house has been located to Kellymount House which is now a roofless ruin. According to Prendergast (1962 OPW Topographical files), the 'present [ruinous] house is adapted from a former larger residence, traces of which may be seen in blocked-up archways, doorways and windows in walls still standing adjoining the house. In the history of Kellymount House it seems that here was the home of a descendant of Maurice O'Kelly of Offaly who settled in Gowran in the time of Queen Elizabeth'. The house was destroyed by fire in 1750 but subsequently rebuilt (ibid.). In 1961 a tunnel (KK016-009001-) was uncovered under the front lawn immediately SE of the house.
