Church in Jenkinstown

On a high gravel bluff at a bend in the Dinin River, on the W bank. There are good views across the valley in all directions. The church is depicted on the Down Survey (1655-6) parish map of 'Mayne' (Hibernia Regnum, courtesy of Trinity College Dublin). According to the OS Letters (1839), 'the east gable of Teampall Maon stood on the northern bank of the Dinan River, in the Townland of Jenkinstown (alias Corcalagh) until four years ago [1835], it was swept away with a large portion of the graveyard by the force of one of the mountain torrents of the above river. It contained one square window' (O'Flanagan ed. 1930, vol. 1, 22-3 (8)). Described by Carrigan (1905, vol. 2, 202-3) as the 'prebendal church of Mayne, or Moyne', he gives the patron of the church as, 'St. Muicin, Bishop and Confessor, whose feast is celebrated on the 4th March'.
