Baillie and Buckley (1997, 35) noted that Ballyrafton was included in an unpublished list of horizontal mills compiled by A.T. Lucas (former NMI director) having been investigated in July 1957 by the NMI. The evidence for the mill consisted of a large oak beam (L c. 5m) with nine mortices (ibid.). However, Baillie and Buckley (ibid.) suggest that this is more likely to have been the base-beam of a small bridge across the River Dinin (ibid.). A sample from the timber gave a dendrochronological date of AD 794 ± 9 years (ibid.).
