Carrigan (1905, vol. 2, 376) states that, 'The first chapel built in the parish since the Reformation stood in Nicholas Phelan's field at Ballinascarry cross-roads, at the eastern base of Grane Hill. It dated probably from the 17th century, and had certainly to be abandoned previous to the year 1700. Its foundations remained till some years after 1811, when they were cleared away'. The precise location of this penal church within the townland of Ballynascarry is unknown.
