Settlement deserted — medieval in Kildrinagh

On the S-SE side of a small valley, surrounded by tillage and grassland. According to Healy (1874-9, 45), 'It is stated by aged persons that Kildrinagh was once a small town, and really something very like house foundations lie scattered on the breast of the hill'. Carrigan (1905, vol. 2, 372), mentions that, 'A couple of hundred yards east of the church, beyond the road, there is a field called "The Shannahaa," in which extensive traces of foundations appear. Two fields south of the church, in "the Old Street," stood the town of Kildrinagh, said to have been destroyed ages ago by a king of Munster'. Traces of low, rectangular platforms and sunken walk-ways dividing them are located in the fields to the N and E of the medieval church (KK012-059001-), showing on aerial photograph (CUCAP AVS043, 20 July 1968). These are still well preserved in the field across the road from and E of the church but appear to have been levelled in the field immediately N of, and within which, the church and graveyard (KK012-059002-) stand (DigitalGlobe satellite imagery, 27 March 2012).
